VIENNA UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS - CENTRE OF KNOWLEDGE
If education had to choose an edifice, then the choice would certainly be the Learning & Library Center of the Vienna University of Economics and Business. There, in the centre of knowledge, »Form, Function & Future« perfectly shape the external factors of the courses of study.
DESIGNED BY ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS
The new Vienna University of Economics covers six building complexes. The Learning & Library Center, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, not only determines its character but also serves as a focal point. Project manager and architect Cornelius Schlotthauer on the architectural concept: »The basic and dominant idea of the design is to draw the campus that was designed as ‘Walk Along Park’ along with its space sequences and traffic flows into the Learning & Library Center (LLC) and to expand it within the building into the third dimension through the folding principle.« The look and functionality of the LLC is as clear as it is impressive.
EACH SEGMENT WAS 3D-MOULED
The outer edges of the building are keen and polished in a crystalline fashion. Their orientation follows the space edges that were predefined in the master planning as well as the alignment of the adjacent building plots. The interior edges are combined in free flowing shapes to form a coherent structure. The shapely Corian counters were planned and designed in this context. Having already realized excellent projects with Zaha Hadid since 2006 – including the groundbreaking kitchen vision Z-Island made of Corian – Hasenkopf Industrie Manufaktur was commissioned to produce the complex and technically extremely demanding counters. Each individual segment was 3D-moulded, with the highest attention to perfect fit, because this is essential for the perfect final result. Cornelius Schlotthauer comments: »The Corian counters were made exactly the way they were planned, and they meet our highest quality standards which we uphold in the LLC.«
